Garrison Community Council of Niagara Launch
- by John Richmond

And they’re off…..

The Breakout Team offers congratulations to the newly appointed Steering Committee for the Garrison Community Council of Niagara, (GCC-N).

The GCC-N received official send-off on Friday November 07, 2008, with a reception held at the Officer’s Mess in the Lake Street Armoury, St. Catharines. Held in conjunction with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment’s 3rd annual Military History Symposium, the reception was attended by military historians from Brock University, Sir Wilfred Laurier and the University of Waterloo, as well as representatives from surrounding communities and the sponsoring agency – The Royal Niagara Military Institute.

The Steering Committee comprised of Brian Doucet, Wendy Canavan, John Harris, Doug Reece and John Richmond, gathered additional names from interested attendees to assist in the organization and direction of the committee.

Residents of the Niagara Region are encouraged to get involved with the GCC-N and get acquainted with their local military. This New Year's Day The Niagara Region will combine civic and military traditions at the Lake Street Armoury, as the Levee will be co-hosted by the Mayor of St. Catharines, and the Commanding Officers of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment and the 10th Battery, 56 Field Artillery. The Levee will be held in conjunction with the Annual Civic Levee hosted by the Mayor of St. Catharines.

The Levee, originating in ancient days, provided the sovereign or feudal Lord the opportunity to throw open the doors of the fort and receive the public. It's a chance to mix and mingle with our local heroes, celebrate the achievements of the past year and toast health and prosperity for the New Year.
